Mr. Johnson brings a range of experiences to UCLA SMP as a former teacher, principal, and superintendent. He served as Superintendent of the Fullerton School District for 15½ years. Before then, his experiences included teaching English in grades 7 to 12. After five years as a junior high principal, he served as a member of the task force that produced Caught in the Middle. Mr. Johnson also was a member of the team that produced the Executive Leadership Center seminars for superintendents. After he retired, he created an Education Department at Hope University, writing the application for approval of the program. He taught at Chapman University in their administrative Tier II program. Mr. Johnson partnered in business enterprise with Geoffrey and Renate Caine as they produced five Gossamer Ridge Institutes (GRI), where together they pushed the edges of knowledge in education, science, neuroscience, and learning. His recent experience includes coaching principals and superintendents, as well as leaders in business and medicine. Mr. Johnson holds a B.A. in English and Speech from the University of California, Los Angeles, an M.A. in English from California State University, Fullerton, and an Ed.D. from the University of Southern California.
