Ms. Howard holds a B.A. from UCLA and a Master’s Degree in educational administration from California State University, Los Angeles. Currently, Ms. Howard is a lecturer in the UCLA Principal Leadership Institute (PLI). Ms. Howard returns to SMP after serving LAUSD schools in Local District 2 for the past three years. In 2004-2005, as District 2’s Secondary Literacy Coordinator, she was responsible for increasing content literacy in District 2’s twenty middle and high schools. She led a multi-disciplinary team of ten district-based teacher-advisors and administrators and 28 site-based literacy coaches. She also guided the work of 120 literacy cadre members. In 2003-2004, she served as District 2’s Science Specialist, designing and facilitating science professional development for teachers in 60 elementary schools. In 2002-2003, she facilitated two-day writing institutes for all secondary English teachers and supported several schools in leadership development. From 1996-2002, Ms. Howard was a member of the SMP faculty, where she co-directed the Reading by Nine Principal’s Leadership Initiative for three years, served as an External Evaluator for ten II/USP schools, and facilitated the Critical Friends Institutes. Ms. Howard was curriculum advisor for the Galaxy Classroom® Language Arts Programs, a classroom teacher for over twenty years, a mentor teacher, and a member of the statewide Equity in Mathematics Education Project.
