Ms. Chan offers expertise in adolescent literacy, specializing in academic vocabulary. She recently retired from Newport-Mesa USD as Director of Literacy Instruction, and has served as English/Language Arts Coordinator at the Orange County Department of Education before that. Before becoming an associate professor in the Masters in Reading program at CSU Long Beach, Julie was a demonstration teacher and staff development trainer in Los Angeles USD, Marin County, Boulder CO, San Antonio TX and Bavaria, Germany. She teaches graduate courses ranging from linguistics to statistics in the Masters Degree in Reading Program at CSU Fullerton, Irvine Campus. Her B.A. in Elementary Education is from UCLA, M.S. in Administration from USC, and Ed.D. in Reading Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

While living in Nuremberg, Germany, Julie produced and broadcast a radio series for parents, “Getting Your Child Off to a Good Start in Reading.” It was aired on the American Forces Radio Network to military bases worldwide where re-runs are still heard today. As an entrepreneur, Julie prepared the franchise package for CompuKids, Inc., her West Los Angeles-based firm that was featured in People Magazine, the Regis Philbin Show, Eye on LA, Two on the Town, Japan TV and Canadian TV. An active member of the International Reading Association, Julie served as international chair of the Computers and Reading Committee and edited a monthly software review column for both The Reading Teacher and The Journal of Reading (now The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy.)
