Francie Alexander
Ms. Alexander is Senior Vice President, Scholastic Education, and Chief Academic Officer for Scholastic, Inc. She is developing new business opportunities and partnerships for the company in the field of educational products and services. Ms. Alexander is the spokesperson and advisor for Scholastic’s Home Phonics Reading Program. She is also the author of several books for beginners including A Kid’s Guide to the Internet and several of the new Clifford’s Phonics Fun readers. She published Scholastic’s first basic reading program, Literacy Place, to an enthusiastic market and positive critical reviews. She also published Phonics Readers which were instant bestsellers. More recently, she was involved in the development of READ 180, an intervention program for students in grade 4 and above, and Scholastic Red, a professional development program.
Recently, she was appointed by the Secretary of Education to the National Assessment Governing Board. The Governing Board is an independent, bipartisan group whose members include governors, state legislators, local and state school officials, educators, business representatives, and members of the general public. Congress created the 26-member Governing Board in 1988 to set policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) -- commonly known as the “The Nation’s Report Card.”
Ms. Alexander is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Planning in the Office of Educational Research and Improvement, U.S. Department of Education.
Ms. Alexander was the Executive Director of the National Council on Education Standards and Testing. The Council published the report Raising Standards for American Education which catalyzed the national standards movement.
As Associate Superintendent of Public Instruction in California, she played a key role in curriculum improvement and assessment development.
Ms. Alexander entered the private sector as Deputy Director for Curriculum with The Edison Project, a company that partners with public schools to create better schools which support high achievement and a love for learning. As well as producing innovative curriculum, she was actively involved in marketing and professional relations with school districts.
Ms. Alexander has extensive teaching experience at the elementary level and has taught college courses. In California, she has also been a language arts consultant for a large urban school district and a resource teacher in a suburban district. She completed a four-year term on the California Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission, one year as the first teacher elected chairperson.
Ms. Alexander is also on the Advisory Board for Advantage, Inc. She has served on boards for the GALAXY Classroom Project (Hughes Aircraft), National Center for the Study of History (National Endowment for the Humanities) and WGBH’s award-winning PBS series Long Ago and Far Away.
She is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Ms. Alexander received her teaching credential from the UCLA. She holds a Master’s Degree in Education and a supervision credential from California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA where she was a lecturer.
