Maurice M. Salter
Maurice M. Salter received his doctorate from UCLA in Higher Education in 1977. His areas of research and interest included the job market for doctoral degree recipients and the characteristics of college environments and students who attend college. He has successfully launched and sold several start–up companies during the past 25 years. He received his undergraduate degree in English from UCLA in 1969 and his Master’s in English from California State University, Los Angeles in 1992.

Dr. Salter worked at the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA as a graduate student and participated in major research projects on college students, financing a college education, and the job market for college graduates. He also was an English instructor at El Camino College. He then became Director of Grants and Research at the University of California at Irvine, where he conducted research projects and taught in the Graduate School of Administration. His research included projects on University of California drop outs, and how California students selected their colleges. He was able to raise several million dollars of grant support from federal and foundation programs.

Through his research, Dr. Salter became committed to the concept of applying research to the college selection process. He left U.C. Irvine to found Maurice M. Salter and Associates, which over the ensuing 15 years became the largest and most comprehensive college counseling company nationwide. Dr. Salter and his staff specialized in college advising for undergraduate, graduate and professional schools admission and financial aid. In addition, the company did extensive work in test preparation (e.g. SAT, ACT, GRE, ISEE), and in subject–area tutoring.

During the 1980’s Dr. Salter witnessed an explosion of college campus visits to high schools and a simultaneous increase in the number of applications submitted by individual applicants. The typical student applying to competitive undergraduate institutions will submit at least five and often as many as 10 applications. In response to the growing demands on students to sort through endless paper application materials, Dr. Salter was one of the founders of the XAP Company. XAP developed the first electronic college application in the late 1980’s. These applications, on diskette, became an overnight success. XAP led in the transition from paper to electronic applications. Today, it is estimated that more than two-thirds of all colleges accept electronic applications and approximately one-half of all college applicants submit electronic applications.

He helped XAP grow to become the application provider to major college and university campuses and systems nationwide. In addition, XAP was the first company to integrate the process of applying for student loans into the college admission application. This led to a partnership with major student loan lenders nationwide. Dr. Salter's interests in XAP were acquired in 1995. The company today is the market leader in the electronic processing of applications and application management.

Dr. Salter was the founder of School Loans Corporation (SLC), Inc. He served as the Company’s CEO and President from 1997 to 2008. SLC generated approximately $2 Billion in federal student loans on behalf of itself and its clients, which include major lenders nationwide. SLC provided turn–key services in technology, processing, fulfillment and funding of student loans. The company specialized in innovative and flexible student loan solutions. Dr. Salter holds two student loan patents.

In order to address the changing needs of postsecondary education in a challenging educational finance marketplace due to Congressional legislation and capital markets, Aladdin Two (“A-2”) was founded by Maurice M. Salter, in 2008. A-2 works with lenders, postsecondary institutions, associations and organizations to develop innovative educational finance and enrollment solutions. A-2’s Enrollment Maximizer program is designed to increase enrollments and revenue for postsecondary institutions. Dr. Salter is an A-2 managing partner.

Dr. Salter is a member of the Board Of Directors of the UCLA Foundation, serving as the Chair of the Foundation’s Audit Committee; and the Advisory Board for UCLA’s School Management Program. Dr. Salter is a faculty resource for the Kaufman Foundation’s Entrepreneurial Education Programs, and for the Young President’s Organization. He is a frequent lecturer on the subjects of college admission, financing a college education, career services, corporate Internet strategy and entrepreneurship.
