Executive Director
The Executive Director assures the financial strength and viability of the organization by seeking, negotiating and securing contracts with client schools and districts. S/he provides a leadership role in fundraising — including grant opportunities — and develops / works with the UCLA SMP Steering Committee. The Executive Director collaborates with UCLA SMP Team Leaders to determine strategic direction at team and organizational levels, including the hiring of office personnel and UCLA SMP faculty. S/he also builds and maintains relationships with the University and other external entities.
Dr. Chernow is the Executive Director of UCLA SMP. He holds an Ed.D. from UCLA in educational leadership and a Master’s degree in education and a Masters’ degree in history from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). His professional background includes being a secondary school history teacher, teaching at CSUN, and 32 years with Pacific Theatres Corporation, where he last served as vice president and assistant general manager. Dr. Chernow has served on the California State Board of Education, serving as its Legislative Committee chair, and on the Curriculum Frameworks and Supplemental Materials Commission, serving a term as its chair. He has also engaged as a lecturer at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in its graduate education program. In 2001, he was selected as a Distinguished Alumni from California State University, Northridge. In 2006, Dr. Chernow was awarded the first UCLA GSEIS Educational Leadership Program award for Outstanding Professional Achievement.
