Teachers Spending the Summer With
UCLA School Management Program

LOS ANGELES — While students go about their summer, many public school educators will still be in the classroom learning to improve their teaching skills as part of the UCLA School Management Program’s (SMP) Summer Leadership Institutes, which are being held throughout Southern California from July 26 to August 20.

The institutes are designed to help teachers and administrators organize and plan for the upcoming school year. Among the institutes offered this summer are the Socratic Seminars, which focus on teaching students to think, rather than teaching them the right answers on the next test. Other institutes will focus on improving writing and teaching skills.

Born out of concerns voiced nearly 15 years ago at a meeting of senior human resource professionals, SMP has been teaching teachers for more than a decade, helping to improve the quality of public education while dealing with significant challenges, such as high student-to-teacher ratios and little money for materials or new classroom construction.

The strategies taught through the program have shown marked improvement at the schools where they’ve been implemented. In addition, teacher morale and motivation has improved.
