SMP Programs make a difference!
Read what our participants say about their experiences:
UCLA SMP typically uses a blend of off-site professional development programs and on-site coaching to help schools and districts achieve the goals they set for themselves and the goals established by the district. Our program design employs a variety of research-based strategies to maximize learning for participants and help schools initiate and sustain changes to improve student achievement:

Critical Friends Groups
“I came with an open mind not knowing what to expect. I leave with a new perspective, a heart full of fond memories and new friends, and the tools and motivation to make a difference.”
Eliana Villarroel - Teacher
Chavez Elementary, Montebello USD
Bridges to Understanding
“You all were very organized, knowledgeable and fun! You did a great job! Very professional! Thanks!”
Diane Gilbert - Teacher
Melrose Elementary, Los Angeles USD
Socratic Seminars
“We often hear about critical thinking and seek ways to do it. Socratic Seminars is a sure way to have a thinking curriculum. I hope that when I use it, I begin to think socratically in everything I teach.”
Susana Jaime - Teacher
Suva Elementary, Montebello USD
Writing Initiative
“This was the best workshop I’ve attended. I felt respected and honored as a participant and free to take risks as a writer and learner. I hope I can hold this in me and take my teaching back to where it was prior to Open Court.”
Jill Glenn - Teacher
Logan Street Elementary, Los Angeles USD

Classroom Walk-Throughs
“We appreciate your support and facilitation as we practice CWTs. The institute was positive and non-threatening, and gave each of us the opportunity for professional input!”
Gloria Nainoa - Administrator
Santa Ana USD
Using School Data
“I was already convinced that data-driven decisions were the way to go. This training helped me see possible ways to give depth to the analysis.”
Linda Falk - Assistant Principal
Caruthers High, Caruthers USD
Advisories
“Once again, I loved that we experienced what we will do as advisors. You have collected an incredible set of resources. I thought that the flow of the [institute] was logical, and it equipped participants with valuable tools.”
Sarah Shulkind - Principal
Milken Community High
