Bridges to Understanding

Bridges to Understanding: Teaching That Matters for English Learners is a three-day institute designed to give educators a portfolio of strategies that guide them in enabling K-12 students to participate actively in classroom learning when English is not their first language. It provides educators with the processes they need to assure teaching and learning at the highest levels and to explore the connection between what teachers do and how students learn.

Over the three days of the institute participants will explore effective ELD and SDAIE strategies that:

    • scaffold academic language development for students at all ELD levels;
    • build grade-level appropriate reading and writing skills across content areas for ELs;
    • engage culturally and linguistically diverse learners in thought-provoking, standards-based learning;
    • infuse higher-order thinking into the EL’s daily instructional program; and,
    • strengthen trusting relationships between teachers, students, and families.
