How SMP Works

UCLA SMP typically uses a blend of off-site professional development programs and on-site coaching to help schools and districts achieve the goals they set for themselves and the goals established by the district. Our program design employs a variety of research-based strategies to maximize learning for participants and help schools initiate and sustain changes to improve student achievement:
  • Coaching: Individualized, ongoing support at the school or district site. Customized coaching introduces new leadership skills and strategies which ensure that the momentum for school improvement continues and that school teams can work together more effectively to accomplish their goals.

  • Communication: Teaching processes that build trust and harness the power of diverse points of view so that leadership and decision-making can be shared effectively. This includes learning new strategies for effective project and meeting management.
  • Support for Continuous Learning: Establishing study groups, critical friends groups, and peer coaching to continue independent learning and to sustain improvements through continuous learning.

  • Best Practices: Introducing research-based instructional strategies and leadership skills that support all students in achieving high standards.
  • Assessment: Promoting the use of research and data to inform decision-making in schools. Informs the continuous improvement of SMP programs and assists schools in assessing their own progress.

  • Reflection: Engaging in personal and schoolwide reflection reveals next steps for changing practices and continually improving results.
  • Inquiry: Introducing processes for inquiry and action research that is driven by the results of student work.
