Socratic Seminars

Socratic Seminars is a five-day institute designed to support K-16 educators in expanding their understanding of complex ideas through close reading and rigorously thoughtful dialogue. An effective, dynamic approach to classroom learning, the Socratic Seminars process can guide educators in helping their students sharpen their thinking skills, construct meaning for themselves from text and other classroom materials, and rigorously examine their own reasoning processes.
During this institute, participants can anticipate engaging in daily 90-minute seminars and building a portfolio of questioning strategies. They will practice selecting and preparing seminar texts, and leading seminars in small groups. Strategies for conducting Socratic Seminars in classrooms will also be shared and practiced.
