University Credit
Institute attendees can elect to receive academic credit through UCLA Extension (UNEX). Satisfactory participation in all three days of the institute, along with submission of the completed enrollment form and $115.00 fee to the UNEX office, will result in 2.0 quarter units.

Writing Initiative
SMP’s Writing Initiative is a customized program designed to improve classroom practice in the teaching of writing and reading comprehension. Educators participating in this initiative will:
- raise their level of confidence as teachers of writing
- explore strategies that will supplement their understanding of the first stages of the writing process;
- identify the connections between the writing process and content standards, reading comprehension, and scaffolding for English Learners;
- discuss the role of standards, models, and criteria charts in the teaching of writing and their use in the classroom; and
- understand what quality work looks like and when that standard has been met in their classroom.
This initiative is available to schools and districts on a contract basis.
SMP’s Writing Initiative clients have included:
- Los Angeles Unified School District
- Local District 2 Office and Schools
- Local District 8 Office and Schools
- 24th Street Elementary
- Ellen Ochoa Learning Center
- Ivanhoe Elementary
- Los Angeles County Office of Education
- Mountain View High (El Monte UHSD)
